How to Get Through a Breakup If You and Your Ex Used to Live Together

How to get through a breakup? Whether you got dumped or you and your partner decided to call it quits, the more difficult question to answer is how do you get through this if you're living together? It's bad enough that your relationship ended but now you're faced with the dilemma of seeing your partner all the time.

1. Try not to overact

When it comes to how to get through a breakup when you live together, money would certainly be involved especially when it comes to "who owns what." Try not to overact and use money as a weapon. It's best to settle things maturely to avoid court orders or legal papers. Calm down and talk things through like adults.

2. Perhaps your ex can move out

If you own the place, then maybe you can ask your ex if they can move out. After all, it would be awkward if you two still live together post breakup. It would be better for both of you if you keep your distance from each other.

3. You can move out

If it's going to be a legal situation, then you can opt to be the one to move out. This can avoid a lot of hassles and more shouting matches between the two of you. If you can no longer stand your ex's presence, then the sooner you leave the better. You can stay with a friend or relative or you can be lucky and find a new place to live almost immediately.

4. Have a schedule when picking up your stuff

When you want to pick up your other belongings, it would be better to do so if your ex isn't home. You don't want to see your ex and maybe your ex doesn't want to see you too so it's best if you have as little contact as possible. Or maybe you can ask a friend to go to your old place and pick up your stuff instead. That way, you can avoid running into your ex.

5. Examine what's happened

History can repeat itself so you need to learn from your past mistakes to keep it from happening again. This is why it's better to keep your distance from your ex. You will be able to focus on yourself and reflect on what's happened. You won't be able to do that if you're still living together because that will trigger painful memories.

6. Exorcism!

If you moved out then be sure not to bring any of your ex's stuff with you. If your ex is the one to move out then clean your home of anything that would remind you of them. All evidence of their existence should be gone! No old photos, clothes, CDs, etc. You need to start fresh and you won't be able to do that if there's something there that reminds you of your ex.

7. Redecorate

When you're trying to learn how to get through a breakup, it would be a good idea to redecorate. Now that you have your own place away from your ex, you can decorate your home any way you want. Make it look like something that's totally you and not something you think your ex would want. Right now, it's all about you and redecorating your home is like admitting that you want to start on a clean slate.
